While Hutch did his thing, Danica wondered about the conversation Luke was having with Eli Ballard. Not that the future of the Stark Lodges was any of her concern. Colt had mentioned Eli’s alibi for the time frame of the murders had checked out. Eli had been on the phone with the manager of the Stark Lodge located near the North Cascades. A call that had been verified by obtaining phone records.

Still, she was eager to talk to Eli. He wasn’t high on her list of suspects, but he did have motive. It was also possible that he might be in danger, too. She was starting to think the killer might want to take over the three Stark lodges for some reason. First eliminating Stacey and Luke, then Eli.

Plus, she hoped Eli might know more about Stacey’s relationship with Jonas Digby.

One possibility they hadn’t really considered was that Digby might have been the primary target, with Stacey’s death being collateral damage. The theory didn’t mesh with attempts against Luke, but it was still an avenue they needed to delve into.

Unless Mara Gilmore had murdered them. Running away from the crime scene and disappearing—and not answering calls—was not helping their newest crime scene tech clear her name.

No, she wasn’t buying it. The sketchy witness made it difficult to believe Mara had killed two people. Donovan had told them to keep an open mind. If not Mara, then who? According to Jasmin, neither Stacey nor Jonas had any criminal history.

But that didn’t mean Jonas hadn’t gotten mixed up in something dangerous. He may have been heading down a criminal path, only to end up murdered before he could get caught.

Pulling out her phone, she called Jasmin. “Hey, it’s Danica. Have you heard from the Oakland PD about Wanda Garth?”

“Not yet, sorry.”

She sighed but didn’t push. The Oakland police would make ongoing crimes their priority, not a quick check on a citizen.

“I’ve been busy, but I promise that if I don’t hear by early afternoon, I’ll call them back,” Jasmin said, misinterpreting her silence.

“That’s fine. There are several reasons they may have been delayed,” she assured her. “I know you did a background check on Jonas Digby, but has anyone looked into his close friends and associates? Donovan mentioned doing that, but I figured he’d delegate to someone from the team.”

“Yeah, I did look at some basics. Let me refresh my memory.” Danica could hear Jasmin clacking on the keyboard. “Oh yes, his brother is a cop in Seattle.”

“What was Digby’s job?”

“He’s an adventure guide for Mount Rainier National Park. Apparently, he did many long overnight camping and hiking trips, even in the winter. From what I know so far, he came back two weeks ago from a hike up the side of the mountain.”

“That’s interesting.” Luke said Stacey mentioned how Jonas often traveled. Now she understood why. “We should find out if he has other close friends or maybe repeat customers to find out more about him.”

“I’ve been running his credit card information, and he has a website, too.
